themasterylab Project is a tool built within a virtual space: the retailmeplatform, and a real space: themasterylab.
The retailme platform offers access to resources provided by retail design and scenography direction. Its goal is to facilitate project management by sharing expertise and making guidelines/information available in real-time. It brings together reports of experiences and problems encountered in the field, publishing them for the retail design community. It promotes network-based work by gathering together all of the competencies and resources stemming from each retail design project. In addition, it allows each user to create his or her own management and communication space.
themasterylab is a concrete location designed as a study space, workshop or resource centre. It is a research and development laboratory for retail design and scenography issues concerning future points of sale. The Lab’s research topics are suggested by retail design and scenography direction based on questions raised by experiences in the field (Countries/Zones). The Lab is a site for reflection organised around the concept of the prototype. Prototypes help to create a shared imaginative real and sensorial connection to a project. They give rise to a shared language and allow users to test out hypotheses, ideas and concepts. The concept of the prototype is used in the broadest sense and all manner of tools can be used. themasterylab is inspired by new organisation and research methods using collective and collaborative innovation methods such as FabLabs.*
All of the Lab-style co-working structures are organised around physical spaces where users can meet. This material presence of shared interests in a shared space helps exchanges to become personalised for enhanced experience sharing. It also favours the kind of team work that promotes transversality and multiple perspectives. This idea of a site for research and innovation is located in the Retail World space. Research is associated with its neighbouring departments (Marketing, Retail Education, Digital etc.). Invitations are sent out within the group (DMI, Zones, Countries) or externally to experts, authors, artists, craftsmen, scientists. The Lab’s creations are intended to add to the Manifesto, a document forming the key resource in terms of design, space and scenography recommendations. Each piece of research or even adds a new chapter to the Manifesto.
A FabLab is an open design and prototype-creation platform for physical objects, “intelligent” or otherwise. They are created for entrepreneurs wanting to move from the concept phase to the prototype faster, for designers or artists, for students keen to experiment and improve their practical knowledge of electronics, CFAO and design, and for DIY enthusiasts design amateurs of the 21st century!
The FabLab concept was created in 2004 by Neil Gershenfeld, Center for Bits and Atoms director at MIT (Massachussets Institute of Technology). A typical FabLab contains a set of professional-level digitally-controlled machines, but of standard quality and low in cost, e.g. a laser-cutting machine able to produce 2D and 3D structures, a screen printing machine able to produce flexible aerials and circuits, a high-resolution milling machine to manufacture printed circuits and moulds, and another larger one for items greater in scale. They also feature standard electronic components as well as programming tools using low-cost and high-performance open microcontrollers. All of these devices are controlled using shared computer-assisted design and production software.
Some FabLabs may also feature more advanced equipment such as 3D printers.![]()
The world’s various FabLabs all work in different ways to combine five functions corresponding to five targets: simply discovering the power of doing and making, intended for children or amateurs; learning by doing education through action, intended for schools and universities; rapid prototype creation, intended for entrepreneurs and designers; local production, particularly well-suited to the needs of developing countries, as well as artists and designers not looking to mass produce; and, lastly, innovative design of products and spaces shaped for tomorrow.
